The most common cause of female hair loss is their hormones and the medical factors and conditions. There are particular causes that distinguish hair loss in men from that in women.

Hormones: Hormonal activity is prevalent more in women than in men and that too at a greater frequency. Some of the conditions that trigger hormonal changes and hence act as the cause of female hair loss are pregnancy, child birth and menopause. These can often lead to balding.

  • Chemotherapy drugs
  • Anti depressants
  • Blood thinners or anti coagulants
  • Birth control pills
  • Anti cholesterol pills

Surgery and illness: This is a potential cause of hair-loss in women and some of these diseases are thyroid and diabetes. Under or hyper activity of the thyroid gland can be seen as a major influence in women. Also, you need to look at conditions that put you through a lot of physical stress such as high fever or important surgeries.

Additional causes: For diagnosing the causes of women losing their hair appropriately, you must not ignore aspects like:

  • Anemia
  • Anorexia

Genetic Cause of Female Hair Loss

Androgenetic alopecia or female pattern baldness is a common recurrence that is a potential cause of female hair loss in about 15% of the female population in USA.

The chemical process works in the manner that the dehydro testosterone cause hair follicles to shut down as women experience a general thinning of their hair. This is in contrast to the process of balding or hair loss in males who have bald patches and a receding hair line showing.

A lot of experts have come up with the theory that the cause of female hair loss is the breakdown of the follicles. And, one of the most significant differences between hair-loss in men and that in women is the reason as to why the appearance of both is different.

While in men, the hair is susceptible to grow directly out of the follicle that result in the development of oil and other secretions on the scalp, causing the blockage of follicles, the process in females is that the hair grows out of the follicle in an angular manner, allowing secretions and oils to flow out readily outside the follicle.
